Peter with his faithful running partner Scooby, shown here on the summit of Mt. Marcy, NY

From Peter:Dear PRM,
For a few years I have been attempting to conceive a proper tribute to memorialize the more than 2300 American casualties from Operation Enduring Freedom. They occupy a special place in my heart, since I was working in the World Trade Center on 9/11 while I was attending college.

A little about myself; after college I worked in financial services, but 9/11 changed my view of everything and I became an athletic trainer. Over the past few years I have helped build a thriving personal training business focusing on improving athletic performance for young athletes, training individuals for various races and weightlifting competitions, and also helping people, ‘evolve’ as I call it, from dysfunctional sedentary cubicle life, to a functional and healthy human being. I am also a local volunteer firefighter in my community of St. James.

In December of this past year I stumbled upon PRM on Facebook and began following this amazing cause. I decided that whatever tribute I decided upon must include PRM. And that’s when everything came together. The objective would be to perform one pushup for every fallen American soldier in Afghanistan, while also completing a half marathon distance of 13.1 miles. It’s a daunting goal, considering the Guiness Book of World Records for pushups is approx. 6000 in 24 hours, and I’m planning to do more than 2300 in under 4 hours while also running 13.1 miles of hills. But what would a fitting memorial be unless it was nearly impossible!?

Concurrently, this tribute fits perfectly with helping soldiers in Afghanistan bring back their beloved dogs who have bonded and helped with morale while on deployment there. I am hoping to successfully obtain pledges for PRM over the next 3 months leading up to Sunday, June 8th when I will be hitting the streets of Lake Placid, NY to achieve the full goal during their annual Half Marathon race!

Sincerely,
Peter Schwarting
<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"type":45}" id="fbPhotoSnowliftCaption" tabindex="0">Meet
Sarge!! Sarge is currently in Kuwait and is looking for a forever home
here in the US! Please email adopt@thepuppyrescuemission.org for more info!

This proud and majestic dog is Sarge. Sarge is a Border Collie/Lab mix
who was a unit mascot that unfortunately had to be left behind. When
Sarge's unit was redeploying back home, they were informed on the ADAP
at KCIA by the ADAP Commander that a dog
would not be allowed on the airplane. Sadly, they had no choice but to
comply with the orders and directives of the Commander, and were forced
to turn him over to another unit at Camp Arifjan, who promised to bring
him home. When that unit redeployed back home, the same thing happened
at the ADAP as before. They had no way to take him home, and no choice
but to leave him behind in Kuwait. He was taken to a military friendly
facility that was going to attempt to help him get back home, but time
after time, permission for Sarge to come back to the US was denied by
the ADAP Commanders. Now, this gentle giant has been sitting in Kuwait
for close to 3 1/2 years waiting to come home to the US where he
belongs, and we need to help get him back.
I met Sarge last week
when he was brought to my attention, and his story told to me while I
was in Kuwait on a mission. I was asked if I had any creative ways to
get him back home to the US where he belongs, and I said I would find a
way to get him home, one way or another. Sarge is a big goof. He has a
LOT of strength and energy, mainly due to not being walked and not being
able to play nearly as much as he needs or wants to. When I first
walked him, he was so eager to go and play that he broke the snap on the
leash as he pulled so hard. He is a VERY smart and inquisitive boy, and
once he gets out and stretches his legs, he calms down and just wants
to play. We gave him a bath, and I took the photos you see here. He was
not a fan of the water at first, since it was very cold, but settled in
and realized that a bath was not a bad thing. Then he gave kisses to
all, and was wagging his tail. He seems to know some basic commands, but
needs a little assistance since he has not had a structured environment
in some time.
Sarge needs a home where he can run, play, and be
very active. He is a dog who loves to please, and who enjoys exploring.
He gets along just fine with other dogs, but was iffy around cats.
There were several on the site footprint where we were, and his behavior
was questionable towards them. I did not see aggression towards them,
but I did not give him a chance to get close enough to see if any was
there or not. He was very curious and wanted to make a beeline towards
their location. He will need to get some remedial obedience training,
but that is simple. He is about 70lbs, and is a solid boy. If you would
like to adopt Sarge, please let us know. I am planning on having him in
the US by the end of March, and would love to find him a home with a
member of the unit that he served with........
All are adopted EXCEPT CLOVER. Are you that special family that she could call HOME. Please email adopt@thepuppyrescuemission.org
These puppies were found in a ditch during a snow storm in Kabul. It was a few weeks before Christmas. The staff brought them to the transit facility and took care of them. Now they are ready to find permanent homes. Spice is being adopted by a family in Arizona. Butterball is being adopted by a family in Pennsylvania. He will have a new brother named Meatball McCarty. Nutmeg is going to a soldier & his family in Georgia. This soldier has experience with training police K9's and also was on base in Iraq & Afghanistan with several pups that ended up being rescued. Sage will be going to Louisiana to a Soldier that served in Afghanistan and Iraq and left behind some special battle buddies that he hopes Sage will fill that void. Coconut is going to . "King" is going to a soldier's family in Georgia that the soldier rescued Priscilla. These are special puppies and we so want them here soon. More fundraising pages coming soon for each of these puppies. Will you help us get these sweet puppies to FREEDOM? beaten and tortured by local boys so badly then when she was rushed to

as it was severed from the bone. She was adopted in Kuwait, where she
stayed with a German lady for 6 years. When she wanted to leave Kuwait
she decided to euthanize her. I could
not let that happen and I took her home. She was adopted by another lady
from Turkey that kept her for a year and then one day just left her in a
cage in the middle of the hottest summer month outside my door. When I
reached home after work in the evening stumpy was barely moving. It was
55 centigrade and she was without water. Since then she has been
petrified of cages. Also when she came she was not able to eat. She
would jump in excruciating pain running and hissing at herself because
she had a terrible toot infection. We took her to the vet immediately
and she had to have around 10 teeth extracted as they were completely
decomposed. She can only eat wet food now. She loves being stroked and
loves attention. She should be ideally in a household with no other cats
or at least not a lot. She is currently in the room with 17 other cats
but I know that its stressful for her.

when the soldiers decided that its too dangerous to keep her in the same

rushed to the vet who said that she has a very slim chance of survival
as she go nerve damage. 9 lives miraculously pulled through again :) She
is now healthy but still has partial blindness and still bumps into
things occasionally. She is very scared of new surroundings but with tlc

and beaten by locals. She reached us in a critical condition but after
many months of care and treatment pulled through. She stayed at the
shelter for 4 years living with 60 other cats until I decided to take
her to my place and give her a better chance for adoption. She got
adopted 2 times and returned as she was
meowing a lot. Nobody gave her the chance to get used to the new
surroundings and gave up on her in the first week. Maya is a cat that
ideally should be with other cats or better even kittens. She has always
been the mother of all kittens and all of them usually sleep with her
curled up. She has been with me for over a year and is an absolutely
wonderful cat. She just needs a little time to get used to the new
place. Her purr is extremely loud and whenever I walk into the room her
purr fills the room.

Brownie’s Story:

I fell in love with kuchi dogs during my last rotation, after my unit adopted a pair of pups. Having the two puppies on the camp drastically improved morale for my soldiers. We ended up bringing both of those pups home, one of which lives with me. About a month ago, I noticed the long rotation was starting to weigh on my team. I decided that the best thing I could do for them was bring a puppy onto the camp. I knew we wouldn't be able to leave a pup here once everyone was attached, but I also wanted a playmate for my kuchi dog. I contacted Sandy about adopting one from your shelter. Shortly after that, one of our workers overheard us talking about adopting a pup and brought one onto the camp for us the next day. She's been great for the team and, as expected, I just can't bring myself to leave her here.

There's not much to the story, but I honestly just love the personality that kuchi dogs have. They're loyal, brave, and loving and will do anything for their family - without a doubt the most wonderful dogs I've ever had. Her name is Brownie, by the way.

Currently, Brownie has a case of mites. We have her on meds and she'll finish her cycle in two weeks. I don't want her passing these on to any of the other dogs. We'll send up all her meds and everything with her. Hopefully you can use them up there.

Crate Chipin

One of the difficult aspects of getting all the animals out of Afghanistan is crates. We here in the USA are so fortunate to be able to go online or to the local store and buy what our furry friends need. Many other supplies are always needed but crates always seem to be the most difficult to have available in Afghanistan.
We appreciate all of our supporters more than you can know and once again we say Thank You to all Team PRM Family & Friends. Supporting our Soldiers is such a blessing and this is our small way of showing them that we love and appreciate them. PAW SALUTE!

In Memory Fund

The Puppy Rescue Mission suffered a heartbreak at the loss of Scout, Stryker, and Sapper. These three sweet puppies were in a very remote location of Afghanistan and the team at TPRM, along with some on-the-ground angels were trying to get to them for transport to the safe facility. Sadly, before transport could be arranged, the puppies were killed by the Afghan police. The devoted soldiers and their families have joined us in turning heartbreak into positive action.
In that spirit, the "In Memory Fund" has been set up - to remember Scout, Stryker, and Sapper - and continue the uplifting work of bringing home as many battle buddies as we can.
At combat outposts in Afghanistan, soldiers often adopt a stray neighborhood dog or two. They provide a huge morale boost for the soldiers there even if they're ornery, diseased and mangy, as the dogs often are.

Jazelle is the exception â?? she is healthy, friendly and affectionate.

Soldiers from the Troop, keep Jazelle at their small outpost in the northern part of the city. About the size of a Jack Russell terrier, she trots along with soldiers on patrol every day. The Troop inherited her from the previous tenants of the Outpost, who took her to a vet at to get her shots.

"The guys leaving tried to take her with them, but she refused to leave the COP," said Staff Sgt. Bill. "She just falls in with whichever soldiers are staying here."

Thank You for your service Soldiers! It is because of men and women like you that we live in the Land of the Free. LETS GET Jazelle HOME!!!Puppy Rescue Missionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04515709433775944314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1488196362399681169.post-53749232048774383562011-07-30T04:00:00.000-07:002011-07-30T04:35:39.778-07:00In Memory of Robert 'Bob' Hanover
Email from the wife: My husband has discovered two orphaned kittens that are in danger of being put down if we are unable to rescue them in the next 2+ weeks before he heads home on leave. I'd like to see these little companions well off; both are so friendly and have been good company to all. I am desperately trying to find an organization/ group that can help us get them back stateside with him and save their lives.

Thor and Apollo are two brothers who were living with some Afghan police officers who guard the gate. These two puppies were spotted by my platoon during one of our many stops. We noticed that the dogs were in bad condition with no food and no water. We fed the dogs MREs while we were there and tried to give them water. The dogs were afraid of the police officers and hid from them. When we would show up they would come out and lay by us because they knew we were not going to hurt them. After a couple of weeks of seeing these dogs like that we decided to bargin with the police for the puppies. We aquired the two puppies and are now taking care of them in our compound. In our compound we made a small yard for them using HESCO barrier wires and made them a nice dog house with alot of shade from a Camo net. They are eating rice and hamburger meat that we get from out chow hall untill we can get dog food sent to us. They are cleaned up and really enjoying life with our platoon. Their names are Apollo and Thor. Apollo has the black snout and Thor the bully has a tan snout. They are wonderful dogs and are really warming up to us. We need your help to get them back to the United states and into a better home. If we dont do this they will have a low survival chance here with the heat, the locals who hate dogs, and the shortage on water and food.

These brothers are so blessed to have had these soldiers caring for them. We will not let you down. Start the Rally everyone for these cuties!
From the Soldier: "I have always loved dogs. I do not care what breed they are as the best dogs I have had have always been "mutt". At home my wife Angela, 9 year old daughter Lexi and I have 5 acres that the dogs can have the run of. When I came over to Afghanistan in May of 2011 I was just getting my feet under me when I learned that my 15 year old dog, Archie had died. A few weeks later, momma dog here had a litter of 8 pups. From the very beginning Dayzee, who was named by my friend, became my companion. She comes to me whenever I get to the tent. She is very friendly and loves to play. She wants to come in the tent but as she is not housebroken yet so I can not let her in. When she gets home, she will have another dog to play with and a 9 year old to keep her company. I can nnot wait to get her home where she can have a better life than she would if she stayed here."

Georgia you will have a new "Peach" named Dayzee to call your own. Can't wait for Darling Dayzee to meet her new sister Lexi and the rest of the family in Georgia. Life is so Sweet!
Thank you to this and ALL the Soldiers for your Service and Godspeed!

Hello,
Here is the story of how i met my beloved Cartman.

It is a simple story of love at first sight. I was on a long and hot security patrol. It was a quiet patrol. When all of a sudden I heard a high pitched ferocious bark. When I turned to the right to look at what was making the noise I saw this cute little butterball waddling towards me. It was love at first sight. I picked him up and began to pet him. His half afghan/half russian owner came out and started to talk to me. I had no idea what he was saying. I got my interpreter to translate. The man told me I could have the dog for free. I felt bad for the man because the man loved the dog as much as I did. So we settled the deal. I gave the man $20 for Cartman and I told him I would take very good care of him.

Cartman is my joy here. Whenever I get down he is there to cheer me up. Truly man's best friend. I would like to always have him in my life that is why I want to bring him home to Maine.

Thank You so much,

Zach and Cartman

Cartman you will not be left behind!

There are also a couple of Powda wrestling with her brother and closest pal Lincoln. I love Lincoln as well. I've heard awful things of what becomes of male pups left out here in Afghanistan. If there is any way I can keep them together and bring them both home for a reasonable price I will.

Our patrol dog Mama had eight pups here on the Base about a month ago. Mama is a goddess here on the Base. She patrols every morning and without her, the soldiers just don't feel as comfortable on patrol. She and her pups live right under my tent. The smallest one, Powda, was such the runt that she still couldn't see while her brother and sisters were running around causing trouble. But I made sure she got special attention. She's since caught up well, still smaller than her siblings but what she lacks in size she makes up for with sheer determination. Each day when I bring the pups food, she is the first to scamper out from under the tent. After she eats, she always leaves the group to come gnaw on my boots or lick the salt from my hands. Lately, her brother Lincoln has joined her. Without fail, he distracts her from me and they begin wrestling, as pictured. The two of them bring such joy every night as I return to my tent. In fact, they all do, not just for me, but for all our soldiers, who do their best to provide comfort for the pups in this very harsh environment. I'd love to bring Powda and Lincoln home so they can enjoy a better life.
Very Respectfully,
R

For Sure we are going to help you , Powda & Lincoln! No one will be left behind!!!

From the Soldier: "I have a 3 - 4 month old puppy that I would do whatever is necessary to bring her home.

Her name is Sookie. I adopted her from some Afghans that work and live next to us. When they first had her, I went over to see the puppy and they asked me if I wanted her. I said yes, but my team leader said I couldn't. I brought the puppy over to our camp to show my team leader in hopes that he would change his mind, but he didn't. She was whimpering and scratching at all the fleas on her so we gave her a bath before returning her to the Afghans. All we had to wash her with was regular shampoo that we use in the shower, but it was better than nothing.

Over the next couple days, a couple of us would coax the puppy to come over to us and we would feed her whatever scraps we had from our meals. Some of the guys saw the Afghans throwing rocks and hitting her, so it didn't take long for her to figure out that life was better with us. One night I started looking to see if it was even possible to bring her back to the states and that was when my team leader caved in. He told me as long as I took care of her that I could have her because I wanted to bring her back home with me. Shortly after that, I found out about the Puppy Rescue Mission.

Since then, I have ordered some good puppy food and she has grown a lot in such a short time. Sookie is very smart and picked up training very fast. There are 4 dogs right outside of our part of the FOB that live with the medical team that she loves to play with. Boss used to be the 5th dog, but she left a couple weeks ago. Sookie walks with me out to the aircraft for shift change and always lays down underneath the helicopter out of the sun waiting for me. The other dogs come join us and they play with each other. We also have a cat that has been here for over a year. Sookie used to get excited around her and mostly just wanted to play and the cat didn't want anything to do with her, but they've since developed a respect for each other and don't really have any problems at all."

Thank you for having such a great program,
