CURRENT RESCUES

TINY & RENEGADE

BOSTON

Tiny & Renegade & Don't Forget Lily~

Brief history:  Tiny and Renegade came to our platoon back in
October 2010 when a young local national boy asked if we would like
them.  We were out on patrol and the young boy said he could not feed
them.  I have attached a picture of them back then.  Tiny is on the left
and Renegade is on the right.  We took them back to our base and it was
not long before they became family to us.  A few months later, we had to
move to build a new outpost and there was no question on whether they
would come or not.  We packed them up in the trucks and moved out.  Tiny
and Renegade have grown a lot since October and they are accustomed to
going on patrol with the guys whenever they go out the gate.  Those two
"boys" will follow our patrols anywhere and stay right with the guys.
My platoon (29 infantymen), LOVE our dogs and any one of them would take
them home.  My Platoon Leader and I understand the costs involved and
would be willing to pay whatever the cost is.  Of course we need help
getting Tiny and Renegade home.  I pray you can help. Thank you for your
time.
LILY~

ROSCO

The Story of Rosco:

The story about how we found him is a simple one. We were conducting a shura one day at a local governmental center south of our FOB. Most dogs in Afghanistan are not friendly and do not simply approach soldiers. As I exited the building, one of the prettiest dogs I have seen in this country came up to me and started licking my hand. The dog was a female, and it was obvious she was nursing. She walked into an abandoned house, and we looked through the window at where she was going. There we saw 3 small, malnourished puppies; one of them was Rosco. When we entered the house, two of the puppies recoiled from us, but Rosco approached as happy as he could be. Our platoon had been wanting to adopt a dog, so this one seemed right. Rosco was so small when I picked him up that for the rest of the mission, he sat on top of my dismount radio on my chest rig. Since that day he has been a loved member of our platooon.

Rosco's final destination in the States will be Ft. Campbell, KY, about 45 minutes north of Nashville, TN. Our unit is scheduled to return to the States in late July or early August. If Rosco gets home before us, one of the wives is going to take care of him until we return. We just want Rosco safe in the States. Again, thank you so much for any help. We cannot thank you enough.

Time to help this BAND OF BROTHERS get Rosco to the USA! Paw Salute Soldiers for your big heart and more importantly for your service to the USA!

Lily: Love at First Sight

From the Soldiers Wife:

I think that Charlie fell in love with Lily the moment he found her. He loves all animals, but I think he has a special place in his heart for dogs. He told me that having her with him has made his time in Afghanistan easier to bear. I know that if he could not bring her home, he would be heart-broken. If there is anything that I can do to help with the process, please let me know, as I would be happy to help. Thank you again.

Lily was found at the back gate to our camp. She was severely emaciated and barely moving. We estimated her to be about 4 months old. We brought her to our compound and she barely moved for a week. She finally started eating and bounced back. We had a reservist who is a veterinarian in the civilian world give her shots and spay her. She is very outgoing and friendly. She learns quickly and has easily adapted to life with our unit.

When we read stories like this all we can say is... we are proud of our men and women fighting for our Freedom. They are compassionate and caring people and Paw Salute for looking after Lily. Yes We Can and Will Help you get Lily to the Land of the Free Because of the Brave!!!

SWEET IZZY

IZZY~What a sweet Momma!

This is Izzy, everyone's buddy. When my team first arrived here on base, and the team that had raised Izzy from a pup left, she spent most of her days running around with her buddy Welches and mostly ignored us. But then about a month after we arrived, Welches had to be put down and Izzy became depressed and lonely. After we lost Welches, Izzy spent most of her time lying in the middle of the sidewalk, making people step around, or over her, or walking around like she was lost. After a few weeks though, a small pup, Jojo, snuck under the gate and became the newest addition to the team. It was exactly what Izzy needed. Izzybegan to look after and really take care of Jojo, and it brought her back to the dog she was before. Not long after, she completely warmed up to our team, and is loved by us all. About two months ago, I started calling her to follow me back to my room after lunch and dinner for a treat, and it quickly became that whenever she saw me, regardless of the time, she figured it was snack time and would follow me around. Some nights she'll sleep on the floor of my room, and when it's time to go out, she'll scratch at the door, or come over to my bedside and let me
know she needs to go.

Izzy really is a great dog. We gave her a bath for the first time this spring the other day, and while miserable, never whined, barked, or tried to wiggle out of us holding onto her. She just stood there and
waited for the fiasco to be over with.

I love Izzy, and really want her to find a great home in the states. She is very gentle (and smart) and would be a great addition to someone at home.

Izzy now has the perfect soldier from the platoon that is adopting her: Now you will be going to The Land of the Free, Because of the Brave Sweet Girl!

JoJo~Boston Bound

Soldiers Story:

Jojo is one of the most amazing dogs i have ever encountered. She's fun, playful, and for the most part obedient. She does need some work on her manners, but she's still a pup about 5 months old. Jojo wondered onto our Fob in November of 2010. When she came on she was only a couple weeks to a month old. I scooped her up, and when i looked at her the name Jojo just popped out, and the name stuck. She's very good with other dogs because she grew up with the other FOB dog Izzie who's also trying to find a home in the States. Originally i wasn't going to take Jojo home I figured she had a great life on the Fob with a lot of love. I ended up being detached from that FOB and going to a new one while Jojo stayed behind. It was one day however that i started thinking that future groups command not like the dogs around, and kick them off. I couldn't let that happen to Jojo. A few days ago we went back to that FOB to pick up some of our guys, and people told about one of our Captains who felt as i did, and wanted to get Jojo home. He needed someone to take her in, and I could not leave this country without that girl coming home with me. I'm from Boston, MA and live in an area full of dog parks, and plenty of room for Jojo to run around and live a life in the states she deserves. Some of these pictures are from her first few months, some are borrowed considering im not at that FOB all the time, and some are from me. I love this dog and want nothing more to get her home.

JoJo~ You have some special soldiers caring for you and Puppy Rescue Mission is here to make this happen for you~ Pack your bags girl because your soldier is bringing you home to Boston!!!

Help us get this beauty to the Land of the Free, Because of the BRAVE! Paw Salute!!!

IN HONOR OF NEDA

Lee Deckelman
                                                                     Our Fallen, Neda:
Want to define a man,,,a "Real Man"? Want to define a friend,,,a "Real Friend"? Want to define a team,,,,a "Real Team"? This morning while I sat in my room on Facebook sorting myself out, and in tears,,,,,my teammates put themselves in harms way to summit the mountain to our north (known to be Taliban territory) to raise the American flag in honor of our fallen female teammate, Neda Soltan Deckelman. On the right is my best friend, teammate, and the leader of this mission, Keith. On the left is a US Army Captain who was part of the team that recovered Neda in Iran. The flag is blowing into the wind which is symbolic with troops moving forward into battle, never backwards. In the distant south you can see our small base camp and all that separates us from the Taliban. The most profound point for me is,,, my teammates did this without my knowledge,,,they did it because they too love Neda, and she truly was a member of our team. I work and live with some of the finest real men on the planet,,,and for a short time I lived, loved and was a proud team member of the most amazing dog on the planet. "Real" is an action,,,and not a word in a book. My life with Neda was real! I can still smell her!

( 25Nov2010-24Mar2011)

In the face of the heart-rending loss of our beloved and beautiful Neda, Lee Deckelman, Neda Soltan Deckelman's dad, says:

"I would love for any one and everyone to donate any amount $$$ to The Puppy Rescue Mission on Facebook in Neda's honor. It's now my mission to establish a fund for ther overall transit shelter needs for PRM and increase their ability to manage sick animals. Just for starters,,, they could use some additional lab equipment for fecal samples,,, to ID infections. I want something positive to come from all of this,,,thats what Neda was all about!!!

We at The Puppy Rescue Mission, Inc., are grateful to Lee for his big heart, as we are devastated by his tragic loss. We are so proud to be associated with this man and we will be proud to accept donations IN NEDA'S HONOR, to increase the ability to care for the sick and injured in that war-torn courtry.

All monies donated through this chipin, or by check marked IN NEDA'S HONOR, will be ear-marked funds, first for the additional lab equipment that could have helped this week, then for veterinary supplies and other costs related to vet care in Afghanistan.

Thank you all & Rest in Peace Beloved Girl!

Rita~She is a Survivor

Her Story:

Rita was about three or four weeks old when she was found by soldiers on my team. She was in a burlap bag that was being dragged and kicked by a group of kids. As many of the locals where we have been for the last nine months feel that dogs are unclean, we knew that she had a very poor chance of any kind of decent life. Most dogs and other animals here are treated very poorly and many dogs have their ears cropped and are used for fighting here. We purchased Rita from the kids and I adopted her. She had a very difficult time adjusting to the new environment due to how young she was, her previous treatment and the complete change of atmosphere including people and new language. We were lucky enough to have some dog food left at our camp from a military dog handler but she was so young, it took a while before she was eating regularly. Everyone on my team really fell in love with her and most had packages mailed for her with everything from flea collars to organic doggie snacks. I still had to constantly monitor her because we work closely with Afghans that did not like and were afraid of her. Everyday we had to repeatedly tell them that she was now a part of our team and family and they could not throw rocks at her or kick her. With this constant protection and a little training, she has grown into a very loving and loyal dog. She will go on daily runs with me, where over and over, she will run out in front of me and sit to pull security for me until I catch up to her. I have an older female dog that I rescued off of the street back home that never got to have puppies but is very good with other dogs and really needs a companion. It was decided that I would be able to provide the best home for Rita and we came up with as much money collectively as we could afford and made the arrangements to start her long journey to the States. Due to computer issues, attatched is one of the few pictures that I have left of her. It was a very difficult day when I had to put her in the back of a strangers car and she looked at me with fear and disbelief then buried her head in the blanket and would not look up again because she felt that she had done something wrong. To date, she has travelled in this taxi for twelve hours, transferred to a bus the following day, crossed Afghanistan, been held at a car dealership for a day, been picked up by a friends dad, who had her for two days, dropped off at the facility where she was spayed. She survived a severe intestinal infection and is now doing good and waiting to continue her journey to my home.

~On a funny note, I have had a list of volunteer dog-sitters and more than one has asked if they could come by to visit, not me but Rita.

Paw Salute Soldiers for your big heart and more importantly for your service to the USA!
